The Golden Thread That Binds Us With Marja Almqvist

Goldwork in embroidery is the art of using metal threads and is particularly valued for the way it reflects light. Traditionally used in ecclesiastical and ceremonial clothing, today it is enjoying a revival in different formats.

Textile artist, Marja Almqvist will lead a workshop in the use of golden thread embroidery. Materials will be provided and some embroidery experience is essential. This is the first step in the development of the proposed Golden Thread Interfaith Embroidery Project which will be hosted by the Margaret Aylward Centre.

Maria Almqvist, community artist, will share with us the reflections that came to her during the COVID lockdown, exquisitely expressed in different textiles and embroideries. Her work will offer us a chance to reflect on the twists and turns of our own lives and how faith has sustained and awakened us.

“I’m a strong believer in the healing power of making, and the empowering of making, being creative”
