Today is the beginning of Diwali, the Festival of Lights which is traditionally celebrated by the Hindu religion, but also by Sikhs and Jains. It is a festival which symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali is typically marked by the positioning of diyas (small ceramic candle lights) around the perimeter and interior of homes, by the exchange of sweets and gifts and the lighting of fireworks. The 5 days of Diwali, mark a time when families gather together in their finest clothes to participate in religious ceremonies and share family feasts.
